A week in the life of a graduate

The week in the life of Geo2 Graduate Oliver Moreton

“A typical week as a graduate geo-environmental consultant at Geo² is incredibly diverse and engaging. My time is typically split between site work and office-based tasks, offering a perfect blend of hands-on practical experience and analytical work.

For instance, my first project at Geo2 involved completing a preliminary report, conducting a site investigation, and then producing the subsequent geo-environmental report. It was immensely satisfying to go through the entire process from start to finish.

The project was a site investigation in West Yorkshire which illustrated the varied nature of my work. I oversaw the drilling of eight rotary boreholes, reaching depths of up to fifteen meters below ground level. Our objective was to locate underground shallow coal workings to inform the site's development plans. Additionally, we excavated eight trial pits to assess for potential contamination. Upon returning to the office with the results from the laboratory, I wrote up the subsequent geo-environmental assessment.

Although this was new for me, my colleagues were, as always, incredibly helpful. During the time since I began working at Geo², they have been outstandingly supportive, consistently encouraging me to ask questions, no matter how trivial they might seem. Their approach of guiding me through tasks while ensuring I work independently has been crucial in helping me retain what I've learned.

This process has highlighted what I can expect from my colleagues at Geo². The culture is remarkable, with senior team members consistently willing to answer questions and offer insights which has fostered a supportive learning environment. The variety of tasks keeps the work interesting and challenging, making each day a new opportunity for growth and development.”
